Through its history of 60 years, the academic idea of the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University has evolved greatly. It has developed from Liang Sicheng’s ‘Theories of Form and Environment’ to Wu Liangyong’s ‘General Theories of Architecture’ and ‘Sciences of Human Habitat’.

Through its 60 years, the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University has been holding the national leading role in design education, design research, theoretical innovation and international exchange. The School’s approach integrates teaching, research and practice. The School’s academic disciplinary structure adopts a supporting framework on the trinity of architecture, planning and landscape. The School’s degree programs implement the 6-year-bachelor-master linked system. Three of the School’s level-II disciplines are listed as of national priorities, including Architectural Theory and Design, Urban Planning and Design, HVAC. The School is also one of the key institutions of  Tsinghua University in the national ‘211’ and ‘985’ projects. The School ranks No.1 in the 2003 National Accreditation for Level-I Disciplines.

From 1946 to 2006, over 4,300 students have graduated from the School. They have shown excellent performance in their careers both nationally and internationally. Many of them have become National Design Masters, Members of National Academies, influential scholars and professors. They have been proven to be capable leaders in their profession and time.

Through its 60 years, the School has collected remarkable achievements in design and research. The designs for the national emblem of China, the National Monument for Heroes, Ju’er Hutong New Courtyard Housing, New Extension to the Tsinghua Library, the development of the General Theories of Architecture and Sciences of Human Habitat, and the publication of UIA Beijing Charter are some best examples, all of which have become influential works or events in the architecture profession both in and out China.

The 21st century is a time of national revival and social harmonization in Chinese history. It is also a time of booming construction. In this context, the social, cultural, and economic significance of architecture and architectural education is becoming more and more prominent. With China’s ‘11-5’ plan and the Tsinghua University’s Plan for a Leading University in the World in the background, the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University has made its own strategic plan of turning itself into a world-class architectural school in China. The first objective is to redefine architecture through investigations in science and culture, within the General Theories of Architecture and Sciences of Human Habitat framework, and to make breakthroughs in both theory and design practice. The second objective is the balanced development in disciplines of design, urban planning, landscape, building science, history and preservation, and built environment technology. The third objective is the vast expansion of international exchange and the addressing of bigger issues in Chinese architectural culture and urban development.

With the economic and social progress in China, with the global evolution of architecture in the 21st century, the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University will strengthen its individuality, keep its leading role in the country, and try its best to be one of the better architectural schools in the world.  ZHU, Wen-Yi  Sep. 2006
