Prof. Xu Weiguo has constructed buildings by utilizing robotic 3D printing technology
2023.02-21
"In the future, 3D printing will become one of the most popular means of construction," says Prof. Xu Weigu, a pioneer of digital architecture, who has constructed buildings by utilizing robotic 3D printing technology.
In 2003, Prof. Xu encountered an exhibition of future buildings by digital technology, for which he had a strong feeling that "this will be the new direction for architectural exploration." For decades, he has promoted the development of digital architecture in China and led his team to develop cutting-edge 3D printing machines and materials for architecture.
After successfully completing a bridge and a book cabin with 3D printing, Prof. Xu and his team have conducted a construction experiment for dwellings in a rural area. They helped a village couple build a farmhouse with five rooms covering an area of 160 square meters, which cost 160 hours. According to him, "the technology is well worth promoting to farmhouses in the countryside."
